Sixth Grade | Seventh Grade
Social Studies in Sixth Grade includes three strands - history-geography, current events and critical thinking.
History-Geography Sixth Graders study early history, Ancient Civilizations. They are exposed to pre history, early man, early Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, the early Hebrews, early Chinese, Indian and South American history and Ancient Greece and Rome. The students will study the geography of the world and how, as man spread throughout the world, the political geography changed and grew. Students will study and draw their own maps. Map vocabulary will also be reviewed.
Students will be introduced to the following:
- Cultural development of humankind from Paleolithic era to agricultural revolution
- Analyze geographic, political, religious and social structure of Early Civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Ancient Hebrews, Ancient Greece, India, China and Rome.
- World geography
- How movement of peoples effected the civilization of man
- Ancient history
- How historic events effect us today
Current Events Each student will be responsible for sharing current events. These will come from a variety of media and will represent the students' developing interests in their community, their nation, and the world.
Students will be introduced to the following:
Critical Thinking Critical thinking is an essential aspect of social studies. It gives students an opportunity to look at history and current events from differing viewpoints. Students will have assignments that give them a chance to consider specific historic events in a new light. They will meet in small groups, and challenge each other's thinking. They will have the opportunity to write in response to questions posed either by the teacher or by their peers.
